This free educational class is for family members, friends, cargivers, and loved ones, of an adult person living with severe mental illness.  This course is for adults only and is taught by a team of experienced NAMI trained family members volunteers who know what it's like to have a loved one living with mental illness. 

A series of 12 weekly classes structured to help caregivers understand and support individuals with serious mental disorders while maintaining their own well-being.  Over 300,000 people in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico have graduated from this outstanding one-of-a-kind program.

Course includes:

  • Up-to-date information about medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence
  • Current research related to biology of brain disorders and the evidence-based, most effective treatments to promote recovery
  • Gaining empathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness
  • Learning through special workshops to problem solve, listen, and learn communication techniques
  • Acquiring strategies for handling crises and relapse
  • Focusing on care for the caregiver: coping with worry, stress, and emotional overload
  • Guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community
  • Information on advocacy intitiatives designed to improve and expand services

What is NAMI Basics?

NAMI Basics is a free 6-week education course for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness.  This course is taught by trained teachers who are also parents/caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years.

What are the goals of NAMI Basics program?

1.  To give the parent/caregiver the f undamental information necessary to be an effective caregiver

2.  To help the parent/caregiver cope with the traumatic impact that mental illness has on the child living with the illness and the entire family

3.  To provide tools for the parent/caregiver to use even after completing the program that will assist in making the best decisions possible for the care of the child.

4.  To help the parent/caregiver take the best care possible of the entire family - especially themselves
